351st swts Sim Lab

Modernizing and decreasing costs of Air Force training by implementing today’s technology.

The Air Force is at a pivotal point. As it prepares to win the great power competition as a more agile force, modernizing training to include complex problem solving, resilience, and new team organization is imperative.

The high cost of hands-on training required for the new operating environment is often prohibitive: facilities, staff, available aircraft, other necessary equipment, etc. Utilizing simulation technology - like weapons simulators, parachute simulators, and VR / AR medical tools - augment the training by allowing these skills to first be practiced in a controlled environment at a lower cost to the Air Force, also providing opportunities for greater repetition and exposure.

The 351st SWTS has been a pioneer in this new type of training and became a prototype case for what the future of training could look like for the Air Force. Its newly constructed simulation lab is a 1,800 sq ft facility that will aid these warfighters in their training journey by providing real-time, real-world scenarios that require students to simultaneously engage his or her physical and cognitive abilities.

The Sim Lab provides a variety of state of the art tools including a weapons simulator, parachute simulator, human performance equipment, and multiple medical simulators, all within a controlled environment.

This project, sponsored by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), was undertaken via an Other Transaction Authority (OTA) innovation contract. The facility development contract with Improve Group was intended to develop a protype facility which would be used to investigate and validate successful approaches to integrating human performance and technical skills training.
